Common questions
Does StealthShare record my screen?
No — never. StealthShare is the opposite of a recorder: it hides things while you share and captures nothing. It doesn't screenshot, record, or stream your display, and it never records what was on screen. The only thing it keeps is a local History of when Privacy Mode was on and what turned it on, which you can clear. Everything it does happens locally and is undone when you're finished.
What's free, and what does it cost?
Every feature is unlocked free for 14 days — no account or card needed to start. After the trial, StealthShare is a single one-time purchase of $19.99 that keeps it (and all future updates) forever. There's no subscription.
Does StealthShare need Screen Recording permission?
No — and you do not need to grant it. To cover a window with a mask, StealthShare only needs to know which app owns it and where it sits on screen, and macOS gives any app that through the public Core Graphics window list with no permission at all. Only window titles and genuine pixel capture are behind Screen Recording, and StealthShare uses neither: it never captures, screenshots or records your screen, it just draws its own panels on top of it. The only permission it ever asks for is Accessibility, and only for the Accidental-Paste Guard, which cannot intercept ⌘V without it.
How does window masking work — will my audience see my Slack?
When Privacy Mode is on, StealthShare places a native frosted overlay mask directly over each protected app window on your screen (Slack, Messages, Mail, or any custom app). Because screen-sharing tools broadcast your display output, your audience sees only the frosted mask with the app icon. The mask is visible on your own display as well; if you need to quickly check a masked window during your meeting, press the Peek shortcut (⌘⇧E) to temporarily reveal it for 8 seconds, or toggle Privacy Mode off (⌘⇧P) once your presentation ends.
Can it turn on automatically when a call starts?
Yes — but on what your Mac is actually doing, not on which apps are open. StealthShare arms within about a second of your microphone or camera going live, or about ten seconds into a screen share, in Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, a Slack huddle, FaceTime or an app it has never heard of, in both the direct-download and the Mac App Store build. Slack sitting open all day is not a meeting, and music playing is not a call. Turn on the meeting watcher and it also arms ahead of an invited calendar meeting — 1, 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes early, 15 by default — counting down in the menu bar, with a Not now button that hands your screen back until the meeting actually starts.
My Do Not Disturb / wallpaper didn't change — what's missing?
Do Not Disturb is driven through macOS Shortcuts: create the two Focus shortcuts StealthShare names in Settings and it will run them automatically. Wallpaper swapping and window masking need no permission at all, so if those are not working it is worth relaunching StealthShare. (Accessibility is only needed for the Accidental-Paste Guard.)
I bought StealthShare on another Mac — how do I restore it?
If you purchased directly via Lemon Squeezy on our website, go to StealthShare > Settings > License on your new Mac, enter your license key, and click Activate. Every direct license can be activated on up to 3 personal Macs simultaneously. If you purchased through the Mac App Store, simply install StealthShare from the Mac App Store using the same Apple ID — the App Store build unlocks automatically at no extra charge. See our detailed Buying & License FAQ for step-by-step guidance.
How does camera detection work on the Mac App Store build?
Slightly differently from the direct-download build, but it does work. The App Store sandbox blocks reading camera-in-use status from the camera device itself, so instead StealthShare watches the recording indicator macOS shows whenever something is capturing. That needs no permission and no camera entitlement, and it means a browser-based meeting joined muted with only the camera on does auto-arm — the case that used to be a gap.
One trade-off worth knowing: macOS lights that same indicator for screen recording. So on the App Store build, starting a screen recording can arm Privacy Mode too, even without a call. If that gets in your way, turn off “Detect any app using camera or mic” in Settings — the meeting-app list and Calendar Auto-Arm keep working on their own.
